FARI UTHURU

Beyond the Catch: Fariuthuru Coral Masreys 1446 (Club Corals Annual Fishing Tournament) Calls for Cleaner Seas/Oceans

Eid ul-Fitr 1446 in the Haa Dhaal Atoll is once again marked by the Club Corals Annual Fishing Tournament. Celebrating its fourth year, this event has expanded to become the region’s largest fishing tournament. As we embrace the community spirit and the thrill of the competition, Fariuthuru, the title sponsor, emphasizes our shared responsibility to protect the very resource that sustains it all: our oceans.

Fariuthuru, as the title sponsor, takes this responsibility seriously. Our commitment to keeping our waters clean is demonstrated through our SACEP Project, “Improving the Well-being of H.Dh Kulhudhuffushi People and Ocean.” Fariuthuru, our anti-littering campaign under this project, has a special focus on Kulhudhuffushi, making this tournament an important platform to promote responsible ocean practices.

While acknowledging the challenges of hosting such a large-scale event without any plastic use, we strongly encourage all organizers, participants, and supporters to prioritize mindful and responsible waste reduction. Our mission to combat ocean plastic pollution is strong, and we are confident that by working together, we can achieve a significant impact.

To facilitate this effort, the organizers have provided five clearly labeled dustbins for the separate disposal of general waste and plastic materials. We urge everyone to use these bins correctly, ensuring that no trash, especially plastic, ends up in the ocean. Every small step is crucial!

We also urge all teams and participants to contribute by using reusable water bottles, thereby reducing the need for single-use plastics. Fishermen and fisherwomen participating in the tournament are reminded to ensure that all fishing-related waste, including fishing lines and bait containers, is disposed of properly after the event.

By being mindful of our waste and embracing small changes, we can collectively protect our marine environment. This tournament is about more than celebrating sport and community; it’s also about cherishing and preserving the ocean that makes it all possible. We extend our best wishes to all the teams!
