Kulhudhufushi PLEASE PROJECT trip to Baa Atoll by MACCS and WAMCO to learn from resource recovery centres with support of Councils and Soneva Namoona. DAY 1 and Day 2- Visit to B. Dhonfanu, B. Kihaadhoo and B. Eydhafushi Waste Management and Resource Centres. Learnt of waste segregation levels at source and secondary segregation at the centres. Witnessed the baling and storage operations of more than 9 categories of waste including different categories of plastics, metals, cloth, shoes, cardboard, styrofoam etc. Volume reduction gained to enable storage of 4-6 months of inert waste. Compaction allowing easy transport. The greatest learning is community needs to be informed and involved continuously to get their buy in which is crucial for success. Leadership, vision and commitment has to drive the system. It can be done with a can do attitude. These learnings will be taken back to Kulhudhufushi to help operate the Material Recovery Facility established with project funding.
